Social Media Thoughts

I find social media to be both good and bad. It is a tremendous opportunity to communicate, but that communication tends to be wide ranging in accuracy and appropriateness depending on the purpose.
One format I do find to be useful is LinkedIn. I do recommend that all my students set up an account and maintain it while they are in school and looking for their first job or two at the minimum. Even after you have that job, it is a good resource for building and maintaining networks for business contacts and future opportunities.
A few basics to include:
1) Accurate education and work experience
2) A reasonably current photo of yourself
3) Skills or competencies that might be useful for job or collaboration networking.
4) Make friends and build your network
Beyond that posting to keep your page active is good and responding to others postings is also beneficial to let them know your still there.
Other social media sites may also be useful, but they need to be maintained and applied to the field appropriately. Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter come to mind as three that can be useful when maintained properly and regularly in a creative field.
