Video Intro

This week, the posting is exploring a video introduction on YouTube.

I have posted one on YouTube that I worked on for a quick intro to myself. There is room for improvement on it, but it covers good basic information for an example. First and foremost, it helps students see who I am, which can be helpful in a world of online classes.

The video also includes a little of my teaching experience and philosophy. It also includes some previous work experience that relates to what I teach. It can help validate what I am teaching as useful in the workforce and not just book teaching. To help organize my thoughts on it, I first created an outline of topics to include, then wrote out a rough script. After a read through, I could time it to see if it needed to be longer or shorter (shorter in my case of first draft).

For the video production, I used a small Fuji x-t200 camera. It is small but has nice basic video capabilities, plus it doubles as a high quality web cam. Audio was recorded with an external USB microphone and Adobe Audition software. I was then able to remove any slight noise and adjust levels in the audio clip. Both parts were combined in Adobe After Effects where the text was also added.

While it is easy to get much more expensive equipment for some people, others rely on cel phones or other equipment they have laying around. I do think it is important to meet basic quality minimums to be taken as a professional in any field, so I do recommend to those that can, use the best equipment you can access within reason.
